Match the job requirements to facts from your experience before editing your CV.

The job fits the work you can do, but your CV barely shows it: relevant experience is buried among old responsibilities. You can ask ChatGPT to select the useful details and express them more precisely. A request to make you the ideal candidate, however, leaves too much room. The response might add team management, new tools or results that were never in the source.

Split the work into two passes. First, establish which requirements your experience supports and what needs clarification. Then rewrite the selected passages. This gives you specific facts to check the draft against before sending it to an employer.

## Prepare two texts and a few clarifications

Copy the full job advert, including essential requirements and desirable skills. Have your CV ready alongside it. If an important task is missing, add a separate note explaining what you personally did, which tools you used and what other people were responsible for. A numerical result needs a real figure with a clear period and method of calculation. If you have no data, describe the work without a number.

Plain text is enough for this exercise. Remove your phone number, address, client information and any other data that is unnecessary for editing. Where needed, replace employer names with neutral labels while keeping the industry and scale of the work. You can restore contact details in the finished document yourself.

## The first prompt looks for evidence to support an edit

```
Help me tailor my CV to one job. Use only information from the CV and MY CLARIFICATIONS sections. The job advert describes the employer's expectations; it does not prove my experience.
JOB ADVERT:
{vacancy}
CV:
{resume}
MY CLARIFICATIONS:
{facts}
First, make a table: job requirement | exact evidence in my text | what remains unknown. Distinguish essential requirements from desirable skills. If there is no evidence, write "not substantiated" and ask a question. Do not fill gaps with assumptions. Stop here and wait for my answers.
```

The evidence column should contain a short quotation or an exact reference to your original passage. A phrase such as "probably able to" proves nothing. Pay particular attention to levels of involvement: doing part of the work, coordinating it and managing people carry different responsibilities.

OpenAI recommends specifying the goal, context, response format and task boundaries, then refining the result. Here the boundary is explicit: the advert supplies the requirements, while information about the candidate comes from their own materials. The answer still needs checking, because ChatGPT can confidently add missing facts despite that restriction.

## What an honest match looks like

Take a fictional customer service vacancy. It calls for recording enquiries in a CRM, weekly Excel reports and identifying recurring problems. SQL is listed as desirable. The candidate's notes say: "I entered enquiries in the CRM, compiled an Excel table of their statuses once a week and flagged recurring reasons to my manager. I did not use SQL." This is a sample source for examining the wording.

That could become: "Recorded customer enquiries in the CRM and prepared a weekly Excel table of their statuses; passed recurring reasons for enquiries to my manager." The actions relevant to the employer are visible. There is no basis for claiming automated reporting, SQL data analysis or a reduction in enquiries. If the outcome was not measured, there is no improvement percentage to add.

There is still no evidence of the desired SQL experience. Discuss it separately: is there other relevant experience, a learning project or a willingness to learn the tool? Identify a learning project as such. A skill cannot move from the advert into your own skills section without evidence.

## Allow changes to selected sections only

Check the table and answer the questions you can. Then specify the scope of the edit, such as your profile summary and a few points about your latest role. Include the checked table, your answers and the selected original CV passages with the second request, especially if you open a new task or chat. You can lock job titles, dates and education as unchanged fields, saving you from searching the whole document for subtle alterations.

```
Use the checked matching table and my answers. Rewrite only the profile summary and experience points relevant to this job. Preserve job titles, dates, education, tools and my level of involvement. Do not add skills, results or numbers that I have not confirmed.
Show the original and revised wording side by side. After each revision, state the fact it is based on. List the job requirements that remain unsubstantiated separately. Write clearly, without promotional descriptions of the candidate.
```

Words from the advert belong in your CV when they accurately describe your work. If you really recorded enquiries in a CRM, saying so is more useful than a vague claim to have provided excellent service. There is no need to repeat one keyword in every point. Preserve the precise meaning first, then check how easily the result reads.

To use the template, open the ChatGPT page, paste your anonymised source material and run the prompt in the model interface. Check the text and your chosen service's submission conditions before sending it.

## Check before applying

Match every new claim to your CV or your clarifications. Check responsibility verbs carefully: assisted, carried out, coordinated and managed cannot be swapped merely to sound more convincing. Check numbers, tool names, dates and the language proficiency levels you claim.

Read the result aloud and consider whether you could explain each point with a specific example in an interview. Keep the original CV separately and associate the adapted version with the relevant vacancy. Good wording alone does not guarantee an interview invitation.
